Im Materialismusstreit der 1850er Jahre prallen die oft provokativ vorgetragenen Positionen des naturwissenschaftlich-weltanschaulichen Materialismus (vor allem Carl Vogts, Jacob Moleschotts und Ludwig Büchners) auf Positionen (insbesondere diejenige Rudolf Wagners), die die Naturwissenschaften mit den traditionellen religiösen Überzeugungen – etwa von der Unsterblichkeit der Seele, von der Gültigkeit der biblischen Weltchronologie oder von der Abstammung der Menschheit von einem einzigen Elternpaar – bruchlos verbinden zu können glauben. Mit den wissenschaftlichen Überzeugungen verbinden sich zudem politische Optionen. Jenseits aller lautstarken Polemik werden in (...) diesem Streit die Erklärungskompetenzen der Religion, der Philosophie und der Naturwissenschaften neu gegeneinander abgegrenzt – wobei der Philosophie (in ihren Vertretern I. In diesem Streit - ausgelöst durch Emil Du Bois-Reymonds Vortrag 'Über die Grenzen des Naturerkennens '(1872) - ging es nicht mehr um die Abgrenzung der Erklärungskompetenzen von Religion, Philosophie und Naturwissenschaft, sondern um die Frage, ob der so erfolgreichen Naturwissenschaft ebenfalls Erkenntnisgrenzen gesetzt seien: an den Problemen der Erkennbarkeit des Wesens der Materie und der Rückführbarkeit der subjektiven Qualitäten menschlichen Empfindens und Denkens auf materielle Zustände. Die Behauptung, es gebe Bereiche, die der Wissenschaft nicht nur mit den damaligen Mitteln, sondern (...) prinzipiell verschlossen blieben, schien ihren universalen Erklärungsanspruch zu unterminieren. Diese Debatte hat auch heute nichts an Brisanz verloren, auch wenn sie zumeist nicht mehr im direkten Rückgriff auf die damalige ausgetragen wird. (shrink)

Nonmonotonic reasoning in its broadest sense is reasoning to conclusions on the basis of incomplete information. Given more information, previously drawn inferences may be retracted. Commonsense reasoning has a nonmonotonic component; it has been argued that almost all commonsense inferences are of this sort. From the end of the 1980s to the present there has been an explosion in research in nonmonotonic reasoning. It is now possible to understand more clearly the properties of the major formalisms from a metatheoretical point (...) of view, the relationships among the formalisms and their connection to independently developed proof methods. Die Schriften sind autobiographisch, historisch und kritisch und vermitteln vor allem geistesgeschichtliche und kulturhistorische Aspekte unseres Jahrhunderts.

Concepts from functional theories of emotions are integrated with principles of skill development to produce a theory of emotional development. The theory provides tools for predicting both the sequences of emotional development and the ways emotions shape development. Emotions are characterised in terms of three component models: (a) the process of emotion generation from event appraisal, (b) a hierarchy of emotion categories organised around a handful of basic-emotion families, and (c) a characterisation of emotions in terms of prototypic event scripts. (...) The basic emotions and the positive vs. negative hedonic components of emotions function as constraints or organisers that shape behaviour whenever an emotion is activated. Through these patterning effects, emotions shape both short-term behavioural organisation and long-term development. The skill-development component of the theory explains how, as children grow, they construct and control increasingly complex skills—which affect many aspects of emotion, from appraisal to emotional self-control. These skills can be characterised in terms of a series of developmental tiers and levels; they are not fixed traits of the child but instead are affected by assessment conditions and emotional action tendencies. The developmental process gradually moves from basic, species-specific emotions to culture-specific, subordinate-category emotions and the complexities of adult emotional experiences. The theory provides a set of conceptual and methodological tools to predict and assess emotional development. It also indicates how emotional development fits with other aspects of systematic change in the organisation of behaviour. (shrink)

Körperbilder sind stets an den Begriff der Kulturalität gebunden. Er bezeichnet sowohl das menschliche Angewiesensein auf die kulturelle Sphäre als auch die Bedingtheit durch sie. Die Formen und Muster des subjektiven Erfahrens, Erlebens und Wahrnehmens unterliegen der Dynamik von geschichtlichem Wandel und lokaler Differenzierung. Die daraus resultierende Pluralität bestand immer schon, jedoch erst die Globalisierung verbindet das zuvor räumlich Getrennte in der einen, globalisierten Welt, in der neben den «äußeren Welten» immer mehr auch die «inneren Welten» aufeinandertreffen mit ihren je (...) eigenen Wertesystemen, Glaubensüberzeugungen und Lebensformen. Das Projekt analysiert anhand von «Körperbildern» die hochkomplexen Kommunikations-, Interaktions- und Transformationsprozesse, die durch die beschleunigende Zunahme kultureller Begegnungen ausgelöst werden. Mit der Freiheitserfahrung eng zusammenhängende Phänomene (Verantwortung, Scham, Schuld- und Handlungsfähigkeit etc.) wie auch Erfahrungen der Unfreiheit (Schicksal, Zufall, Bestimmung, Konventionen, Gewalt etc.) bestimmen unser Leben (zumindest nach unseren Vorstellungen). Die durch die interkulturelle Arbeit und Erfahrung gewandelte Selbstwahrnehmung schärft die Wahrnehmung der kulturellen Bedingtheiten eigener und anderer Positionen. (shrink)

Von der offenen Ablehnung Bertrand Russells bis zur positiven Einschätzung durch Arthur Danto hat Nietzsche emen schlechten Ruf als Phüosoph in der Analytischen Tradition gehabt. Im Wiener Kreis, der eine nicht wegzudenkende Rolle in der Geschichte der Analytischen Phüosophie spielt, wurde Nietzsche jedoch schon immer zutiefst respektiert als jemand,durch dessen Werk Rolle und Funktion der Analyse historisch verständlich wird. Dies güt vor allem für Moritz Schlick und Rudolf Carnap, aber auch für Ludwig Wittgenstein und für Otto Neurath, Ludwig von Mises (...) und Kari Popper. Sie alle nehmen Nietzsche als Denker ernst, ohne sich ihm mit analytischem Begriffsinventar zu nähern. (shrink)

Relational complexity theory has important virtues, but the present model omits key aspects and evidence. In contrast, skill theory specifies (1) a detailed series of developmental changes in relational complexity from birth to age 30, (2) processes of interaction of content and structure that produce variability in complexity, (3) the role of cortical development, and (4) empirical criteria for complexity levels, including developmental discontinuities. Many findings support these specifications.

A growing international movement, called educational neuroscience, aims to inform educational research, policy, and practice with neuroscience and cognitive science research. The research brings a powerful capability to directly intervene in children's biological makeup, stirring ethical questions about the very nature of child rearing, and the role of education in this process. This study argues that designing children is ethically unacceptable and presents a few case studies to highlight important ethical issues. This article focuses on a central issue—the distinction between (...) two general types of educational interventions informed by neuroscience, designing children versus raising children. These scenarios envision educational reforms that might follow in the wake of advances in understanding the biological bases of ethical behaviors. It hopes to provoke others to consider emerging ethical issues in mind, brain, and education, and to take preemptive action to protect children's right to participate in their own development. In this article we frame a set of important issues in the emerging field of Mind, Brain, and Education in terms of three broad headings: methods, models, and morality. Under the heading of methods we suggest that the need for synthesis across scientific and practical disciplines entails the pursuit of usable knowledge via a catalytic symbiosis between theory, research, and practice. Under the heading of models the goal of producing usable knowledge should shape the construction of theories that provide comprehensive (...) accounts of human learning and development spanning multiple levels of analysis. Under the heading of morality usable knowledge must be put to good use: Its application and dissemination ought to be infused with moral considerations gleaned from dialogue among all those potentially affected. Generally, the field should be shaped not only by its constituent scientific disciplines but also by its applications to education and learning. Thus we argue for the adoption of a kind of pragmatism that would be best actualized by building research-school collaborations between researchers and practitioners. (shrink)

Barry Smith has written a book about an important topic in philosophy and its recent history, concerning the legacy of Franz Brentano. “The Legacy of Franz Brentano” is also its subtitle, a subtitle much more revealing of its contents than its title: Austrian Philosophy. That title makes one expect either a general picture of philosophy in Austria, past and/or present, or an account of what Rudolf Haller has called Austrian Philosophy, a term that refers to its golden age, to a (...) tradition whose main characteristics are, according to Haller, empiricism, proximity to science, and a concern with language. Smith includes these properties in his characterization of the legacy of Brentano, and adds quite appropriately for that legacy “a concern with ontological structure” and “an overriding interest in the relation of macro-phenomena ... to ... micro-phenomena which underlie or are associated with them”. Smith is quite aware that this addition does not hold for the tradition of Austrian philosophy, since he opposes it to a German tradition, and delineates the former “by means of a list beginning with Bolzano, Mach and Meinong, and ending with Wittgenstein, Neurath, and Popper”. For two decades Adolf Grünbaum’s publications have shaken the foundations of psychoanalysis and stimulated the thinking of philosophers of science, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, and psychologists. It all started with Grünbaum’s critique of Popper’s famous critique of psychoanalysis as not falsifiable. Grünbaum succeeded in giving counter-examples to Popper’s claims. Within two years after his own systematic and detailed analysis of psychoanalysis, and especially of Freud’s writings in The Foundations of Psychoanalysis: A Philosophical Critique he responded to fortyone reviewers with his “Is Freud’s (...) theory well-founded?”.
